The Trade River Retreat Center is available for individuals or couples for an artists getaway or a personal retreat.

Located a very scenic 90-minute drive from the Twin Cities, the drive itself becomes the beginning of your retreat journey. This serenely beautiful, extremely private North Woods setting, sits at the end of a long winding driveway. The main cabin (your home) rests right on the bank of the Trade River, a designated trout stream and protected waterway. The log cabin and outbuildings will not be inhabited while you are there, so you can enjoy the rare gift of complete solitude during your visit.

The Trade River, with its clear water, shallow depth, strong current and smooth sand bottom, makes a great location for swimming, wading, photo sessions, or just cooling off with friends. The extremely secluded grounds are subtly landscaped but mostly kept in a natural state with many pine, maple and birch trees. Numerous Japanese garden touches, walking paths, Japanese lanterns, small shrines and numerous artistic details will help awaken your creativity, nourish awareness and provide artistic inspiration.

With its close proximity to the Twin Cities and its extremely tranquil and private setting, this is a perfect location for personal retreats for artists, writers, yoga practitioners, those in the healing arts or anyone in need of personal, spiritual or artistic rejuvenation.

MAIN CABIN: Modern yet rustic, but not primitive, the retreat center has been built not only for maximum energy efficiency, but with much care in providing a safe, non-toxic, all-natural environment. Facilities include a large, modern, fully-equipped kitchen with commercial refrigerator and 6 burner gas range, full bathroom with hot and cold running water and a claw-foot tub, gas heat, electricity, phone, wireless high-speed internet, wood-burning stove, skylights, wood-fired sauna, screen porch on the river bank, wooden deck overhanging the river, a gazebo, fire-pit, photo library and high-resolution audio system with large CD collection that also steams from your phone or computer via Bluetooth.

LOG CABIN: There is also a private hand-built log cabin on premises, 100 yards from the main cabin and overlooking the river. It has a large field-stone fireplace with wood-burning stove, a sleeping loft with a luxurious queen-sized futon, a large window facing the river, and huge screen porch with a sleeper-sofa. It will never be occupied during your visit, unless by you! The log cabin can be rented only additionally on Airbnb but only if already booking the main cabin.

SLEEPING SPACE: Several sleeping options available include a queen bed in a cozy cedar lined private bedroom and a comfy queen-sized futon in the living room under 4 skylights in front of the wood-burning stove, or a futon couch on the screen porch right by the river.

PRIVATE WORKSHOPS: If you arrange for a Private Vision Quest Photo Workshop with Doug, he will work with you to create a unique personal itinerary based on your needs  and desires for artistic and personal growth. Delicious, healthy, hearty meals will be prepared for you by our own private cook from fresh organic or locally-sourced ingredients and served in a casual, relaxed setting.
