Assignment/Response Workshop
with Douglas Beasley
July 28 & 29, 2018

Integrate your spiritual practice with your artistic or photo practice. This special weekend workshop is about expanding the experience of awareness through photography and integrating our spiritual practices into our artistic practice. Working together they can strengthen and enhance one another. If you’ve been to Doug’s previous workshops consider it a ‘tune-up’, if you haven’t here’s a chance to come and see what the fuss is all about! This weekend could change your relationship to photography forever and deepen your creative path.

Through numerous photo and writing exercises we learn to deepen our visual awareness while clarifying our approach to choosing appropriate subject matter, making images that are both more personal, powerful and less generic. We work on cultivating simplicity and making more compelling photographs, supporting the notion that a photograph isn’t ‘taken’ but made. We become better photographers by becoming more in touch with our inner selves and then use that awareness to deepen our connection with our subject. The power of intuition fueled by the balance of contemplation and decisiveness (be mindful/act now) will be explored.

This is a challenging invitation to redefine not only what is personally suitable subject matter but your whole approach to creative expression. Inspiration will be sparked by a balance of demonstrations, examples, discussion, sitting and walking meditation, readings, writing and poetry. Much practical advice will be given and most concepts will be accompanied by Doug’s handouts, to help digest this new information.

The New York Open Center is a non-profit educational and cultural center offering programs intended to heal the body, nourish the soul and awaken the spirit. It aims to serve as a focal point for holistic thought and practice in the heart of New York City, near lower Midtown Manhattan.

Who Should Attend:
This class is appropriate for all levels. While participants should have a working knowledge of their camera, the creative process of image making will be emphasized over the mechanics of camera use. Open to all degrees of experience but better suited to those looking to expand their creativity and vision. This workshop is perfect for those who want to try a short version of Doug’s normal week long Zen & the Art of Photography workshops.
