This workshop is full!

The urban environment is not often seen as sacred. We will work on going beyond past preconceived ideas of what and where is sacred and who controls that definition. Moving beyond stereotypes and making a deeper, more genuine connection to ‘place’ and learning to express that deeper connection in our photography will be a priority. We will use land and sky, as well as the urban environment, to transform an emotional experience into a visual one. We explore making, not taking, photographs that are less generic and more personal. This will be about the inner journey of photography, nourishing a deepening connection to one’s heart and soul, then bringing that awareness into our image making process. Self-expression and introspection will be encouraged. We also work on giving our photos simplicity and clarity while adding layers of meaning to make deeper and more memorable images.

You do not have to practice, or even understand Zen to join us for this powerful weekend of exploring new ways of seeing and making photographs that come from a more personal and intimate place, using spirituality as creative force.

Presented by the Houston Center for Photography, this workshop is a challenging invitation to redefine not only what is personally suitable subject matter but our whole approach to creative expression. Inspiration will be sparked by a balance of conversation, photo demonstrations, meditation, critiques, writing exercises, readings, poetry or whatever means necessary. Field trips and numerous photographic exercises and assignments, custom designed by Doug, are concerned with both internal and external experience and growth.

Who Should Attend:
Open to all levels of experience but better suited to those looking to expand their creativity and vision. We will emphasize personal expression and creative vision over the mechanics of camera use. However, students should have a good working knowledge of their cameras as well as a desire to take their image making to a more meaningful and personal level. This workshop is perfect for those who want to try the shorter weekend version of the normally week-long seminar.
