THE EMOTIONAL LANDSCAPE
Wild Rice Retreat, Bayfield, WI
Assignment/Response Workshop
with Douglas Beasley
June 26 – July 1, 2022

With the backdrop of majestic Lake Superior and the small towns along the coast as our backdrop, we use land, sky, and water, as well as our inner-selves, to transform an emotional experience into compelling visual imagery. This workshop is not about making ‘pretty’ pictures or ‘postcard’ like records of one’s travels, it is about making a deeper, more authentic connection to our chosen subject, then learning to express that connection visually through our photography.

By consciously making, rather than taking, photographs while nourishing a deepening in our heart/soul/self we bring that awareness into our photo-making process. We will work on giving our images deeper layers of meaning to make stronger, more powerful photographs that others can feel as well as see.

Inspiration will be sparked by a balance of conversation, readings, poetry, photographic exercises and assignments, walking meditations, writing exercises, photo examples, portfolio reviews, instructor presentations, and by our fellow participants. Daily guided field trips with photographic with specific assignments will be a big part of this experience, with individual attention and feedback given. Fun, laughter, and introspection are to be expected. Mornings will spent in and around Wild Rice Retreat in class and working on some of Doug’s photo ‘exercises.’ Afternoons will find us out exploring on local field trips, making photographs and working on photo assignments.

One afternoon will also include a model session, where you can learn more about respectful, non-sexist ways of working with human subjects or even nudes. If this does not interest you there will be other options.

This is sure to be a transformational experience that lead you to make more powerful and emotionally impactful photographs. Come join us!

Who Should Attend: Open to all levels but students should have a working knowledge of their cameras and want to take their image making to a more meaningful and personal level. Digital and film, in all formats, are welcome.
