Danielle in Hot Springs, Breitenbush, OregonBreitenbush Hot Springs, Oregon Mountains
Assignment/Response Workshop
with Douglas Beasley
September 11-15, 2016

This is a spectacular setting for a photo workshop. Breitenbush Hot Springs, with its remote mountain and pristine forest setting, is also the perfect place for a retreat experience. Once you park your car (a beautiful 2 hour drive from Portland, OR) you will not need to see a vehicle again until you leave! This also makes it the most relaxing and retreat-like of all of Doug’s workshops, but the photo workshop will still be very intensive!

You do not have to practice, or even understand, Zen to join us for a powerful week of exploring new ways of seeing and making photographs that come from a more personal and intimate place, using spirituality as creative force.

Revitalize your photography while exploring your relationship to your subject, your camera and yourself. We learn to deepen our visual awareness while clarifying our approach, making images that are both more personal and more meaningful. Your images will become more powerful by cultivating simplicity and developing the power of intuition fueled by the proper balance of contemplation and decisiveness (be mindful/act now).

This workshop provides a unique opportunity to rethink your expectations of what it means to ‘see’. We will work on cultivating simplicity and making more powerful photographs, supporting the notion that a photograph is not ‘taken’ but ‘made’. We will learn to become stronger visually by becoming more in touch with our inner selves and then use that awareness to deepen our connection with our subject; whether it’s a person, place, or thing. We will also pay attention to lighting, composition, depth-of-field and exposure issues. Much practical advice will be given in these areas but more importantly you will practice using this information to make more powerful and meaningful images.

Zen & the Art of Photography is a challenging invitation to redefine not only what is personally suitable subject matter but your whole approach to creative expression. Inspiration will be sparked by a balance of conversation, meditation, sharing photos, critiques, writing exercises, readings, poetry or whatever means necessary. Numerous photographic exercises and assignments will be site specific and are concerned with both internal and external experience and growth. Expect to learn from fellow students as well as from class activities. Be prepared to grow past your previously perceived boundaries. Expect fun, laughter and genuine deep inquiry into your own personal artistic process.

Mornings will be spent in class on photographic exercises and early afternoons with Doug doing assignments or critiques and late afternoons open for hiking, soaking, working on your photo assignments or to book a massage. There will also be a short class session after dinner, then open time for reading, a sauna or soaking under the stars!

Student testimonials from this workshop:
“I feel that I haven’t quite got words yet to convey how important and transformational my time at Breitenbush was. It’s funny that I have been avoiding “logging on” and answering emails for the last 3 weeks for the emotions it wells in me. I look forward to our paths crossing again. Thank you for offering an open heart.”
Deb Walsh, Melbourne, Australia

Marti Corn, Houston, TX

“You’re a very special person and teacher. Our group was very dynamic and each gave of themselves to make the few days a truly memorable event, one I will long remember. I miss them all very much and it’s been but two days.”
– Jeff Packman, Portland, OR

“I returned to The Land of Enchantment with all kind of ideas about photo projects and invigorated with the art and craft of Photography. In the past I have done photography in a desultory manner; perhaps i am diffident about my talent in this respect. Your workshop inspired me to take/make more pictures, and to do it on a regular basis.”
– Alvaro Enciiso, Galcitas, NM

“What a wonderful workshop! Thanks for more tools to see better and a further insight into living in the present!”
– David Pitzer, West Linn, Oregon

“I had a wonderful time at the workshop… Thanks Again! What an inspiration. Literally. Down to the meaning of the word… ‘to breathe in’. Thanks for helping me breathe again.” – Hollye Schumacher, Scottsdale, AZ

Thank you so much for sharing your wisdom and gentle love with me this week in this beautiful, sacred place.  I cannot put into words the nature and scope of the personal transformations that have taken place here.”
– Bridget McGinn, Bend, Oregon

“Your workshop is life changing to me. I am already planning on attending your Zen and the Art of Photography in Sept. You are such an inspiration and you do such a great job with choosing the right poems – words of depth and soul searching. The flow of assignments building on to each other and pushing us to stretch were incredible. You are continuing to master the art of growth for others and I very much appreciate your wisdom and experience.”
Gigi Johnson, Coos Bay, OR

“I can’t tell you how much Breitenbush did for me, really made me feel alive again.  Forget the photography, it was a great experience in terms of my overall well being.”
Blake Martin, Pittsburgh, PA

“Appreciation’ sounds too weak.  I’d rather say, ‘Namaste’ to everyone.  There is something deeply special when we gather to share ourselves through things we care about.  Art is just a vehicle, but it’s a good one!”
– Jack Semura, Portland OR

While participants must have a working knowledge of their camera, the creative process of image making will be emphasized over the mechanics of camera use.
