Kyoto, Japan
Travel/Destination Workshop
with Douglas Beasley
September 29 – October 9, 2018

Doug invites you to join him in his favorite place on the planet, Kyoto, the heart and soul of old Japan, for a once-in-a-lifetime photo adventure!

We meet in Kyoto, the ancient capital and heart of old Japan. As we wander through old streets and down mysterious alleys, make images in serene Buddhist Temples, stunning Zen gardens and ancient Shinto Shrines, our images reflect the surreal world of inner calm and tranquility. Every moment becomes a good opportunity for a photo that speaks to a deeper meaning. The itinerary not only reflects Doug’s interest in Zen but his deep love of Japanese gardens and architecture.

Experience the many contrasts and contradictions that is modern Japan, where ultra-modern and futuristic meets the ancient ways, steeped in centuries old traditions and customs. We will visit ancient Zen temples and shrines, photograph splendid Japanese gardens, meet with an indigo fabric dyer, a calligrapher/brush artist, a ceramicist, a shakuhachi bamboo flute player and other traditional craftsmen. We even spend time with and photograph a Meiko, an apprentice geisha-in-training.

Our Japanese guide and translator Tomoko, a budding photographer, is an expert in Japan travel and helps introduce us to a world inaccessible to most tourists. The photo opportunities will be unique, the food delicious and Doug will help each participant find their own vision and perspective.
