The Trade River Retreat Center is available on Airbnb for individuals or couples for an artists getaway or personal retreat. Or have a private custom workshop created for you or your small group by Douglas Beasley. A very scenic 90-minute drive from the Twin Cities, this beautiful, very private north woods setting rests on the banks of the Trade River, a designated trout stream and protected waterway.

The Trade River, with its clear water, shallow depth, strong current and a smooth sand bottom, makes a great location for photo shoots, wading, swimming or just cooling off with friends. The extremely secluded grounds are subtly landscaped but mostly kept in a natural state with many pine, maple and birch trees. The many Japanese garden touches, walking paths, lanterns, small shrines and numerous artistic details will help awaken your creativity, nourish awareness and provide artistic inspiration.

If you come for a private Vision Quest Photo Workshop with Doug, delicious, healthy meals will be prepared for you by our cook from fresh organic or locally-sourced ingredients and served in a casual, relaxed setting. If you are on a personal private retreat you can use the large modern kitchen or cook outside on the infrared gas grill, Japanese charcoal grill or even use the cooking grate on the fire pit.

After dinner, gather around the fire pit with a cup of tea or glass of wine to discuss the day’s events, journal on the screen porch by the banks of the river, hang out in the gazebo, meander along the river bank, walk down the long winding driveway to nearby paths, nap in the hammock, sit inside by the wood stove or detoxify in our wood-fired sauna. Or just enjoy the quiet, listening to the many frogs and birds. Other wildlife visitors include deer, black bear, porcupines, fox, bobcats, wild turkeys, grouse, pheasants, owls, hawks, eagles, coyotes and an occasional wolf.

With its close proximity to the Twin Cities and its extremely tranquil and private setting, this is a perfect location for a small group or personal retreats for artists, writers, yoga practitioners, those in the healing arts or anyone in need of personal, spiritual or artistic rejuvenation.

FACILITIES: Modern yet rustic, but not primitive, the retreat center has been built not only for maximum energy efficiency, but with much care in providing a safe, non-toxic, all-natural environment. Facilities include a large, modern, fully-equipped kitchen with commercial 6 burner gas range, full bathroom with hot and cold running water and a claw-foot tub, gas heat, electricity, phone, wireless high-speed internet, wood stove, skylights, wood-fired sauna, screen porch on the river bank and wooden deck overhanging the river, a gazebo, fire-pit, tipi, photo library and high-resolution audio system. There is also a private hand-built log cabin on premises that will never be occupied during your visit.

SLEEPING SPACE: Several sleeping options available include a cozy cedar-lined private bedroom with skylight, a comfy queen-sized futon in the living room under skylights by the wood-burning stove, or a small futon couch on the screen porch right by the river. There are also cots available for the tipi or gazebo near the fire pit.

More Testimonials

“I just returned from your lovely spot in the Wisconsin woods, where we had a spectacular weekend. Today we canoed on the St Croix River where the water was abundant, the rapids fun and the weather absolutely perfect. Back at your place Connor loved exploring in the river and we even caught six or seven fish, including a decent sized small mouth bass. They were all returned without harm to their home. We picked raspberries along your driveway and watched a big snapping turtle burrow in the sand and a large turkey vulture land nearby. On the St Croix we saw a mature eagle, a deer and a fawn drinking from the river and very few other people.”
Chris Polydoroff, Lauderdale, MN

“Thank you for a wonderful weekend. It was everything I had hoped it would be: adventurous, relaxing, nurturing, challenging, and gorgeous weather to boot.”

You have a wonderful country retreat. Thanks for letting me get a taste of it. I think you are providing a unique experience for our (photo) community.”
Larry LaBonte, St Paul, MN

“You and your staff went out of your way to help me get the most out of the workshop. I also want to compliment you on the meals that were prepared and the unique facility in general. Your retreat center location is artfully inspiring. The lodging was peaceful and comfortable. Maybe next time I will try and brave it outdoors in the tipi. I’m a creature of comfort and was delighted with your rustic ambience. The food was fantastic. You have done an exceptional job of offering courses in an unparalleled setting. I will be back for more!”
Peggy Lauritsen, Minneapolis, MN

“Adapting from the serene spirit of your retreat center and the integration of all that got stirred up has been slow going. I felt at a deep level that being in that place of seeing and connecting is not only where I need to be, but I was there without judgment. Next steps along the journey will hopefully allow me to be there more often and to use that same spirit in taking my imagery into the world.”
– Peter L Johnson, Minneapolis, MN
