kenyaNairobi and Naivasha, Kenya
with Douglas Beasley and Elizabeth Barnwell
Spring 2015

Join Doug and photographer Elizabeth Barnwell at her favorite place to travel and photograph, as she shares with us her rich connections and friends made over her last several visits.

Kenya is home to some of the planet’s most diverse and magnificent wildlife. It is also known for a culture rich in the arts. Music, dance and craft are a part of everyday life. Elizabeth and Doug have planned a photographic adventure rooted in the culture and majesty of the wild kingdom, highlighted by a very real and human experience.

Join us to snuggle baby elephants at an elephant orphanage in Nairobi, then visit and photograph the engaging and charming girls of the Light of Hope orphanage in Naivasha, then come on safari for 5 days in the national game parks.

Our trip begins in Nairobi, the capitol city of Kenya, where we will spend two days learning about Kenyan culture, wildlife conservation and rescue while exploring the richness of Nairobi. Our home in Nairobi will be the beautiful Fairview Hotel, a wonderful place with great food, an amazing buffet and wireless. We’ll go over some key phrases in Swahili, but the words you truly need to know are, “I haja ya snuggle tembo mtoto” which means “I need to snuggle a baby elephant”! This will come in handy when we visit the Daphne Sheldrick baby elephant orphanage. We also visit Giraffe Manor for lunch.

Our time in Nairobi is followed by a 5 day safari through at least 3 different game parks where we will track and photograph lions, elephants, leopard, rhino, giraffe, zebra, baboons, hippos, buffalo, warthogs and countless species of birds including the huge flock of flamingos at Lake Nakuru. Photographic emphasis will be placed on artistic interpretation of classic scenes, creative composition and visual storytelling versus typical tourist wildlife photos. We will luxuriate in the comfort of 4 and 5 star game park lodges.

Then on to 2 days in Naivasha, a region perched on the edge of the beautiful Great Rift Valley. We will visit with the students of Light of Hope Home and School for Girls and do a photographic service project with the girls. Light of Hope is rapidly becoming a model for orphan care services in East Africa and will challenge your notions of what it means to be family. A visit to Light of Hope is a rare opportunity and is made possible by Elizabeth’s long-standing friendship with the founders. This will be an amazing and unforgettable experience!

Did we mention we will be snuggling baby elephants? What could be better than that!

Student Testimonials About This Workshop:
“It was a totally awesome and life-changing experience. Elizabeth is an amazing teacher and photographer, and we had some extraordinary experiences. It was such a privilege to go there. This was a totally unique opportunity to interact closely with the girls of the school and really feel that my photography had a positive impact on them.”
– Deborah Pierce, M.D. Rochester, NY

More Testimonials
“Our instructor Elizabeth’s philosophy is that we need to give back to the people we photograph. We carried small, portable printers with us and gave each person a copy of their picture and were surrounded by the residents wanting to be photographed. Photographing and spending time with the girls was a life changing experience for me and I hope to return someday. Throughout the workshop there were constant photo opportunities. Elizabeth is an excellent, patient teacher and she helped me improve my photography.”
– Diane Magnuson, Fort Meyers, FL
